Lauki and weight loss
A study conducted on animals, published in the Asian Pacific Journal of the Tropical Medicine in September 2012, found that lauki helped in minimizing the weight gain in rats which were otherwise fed a high-fat diet. However, no such research has been conducted on humans yet.
Lauki vs. lauki juice for weight loss
This vegetable is very low in saturated fats and cholesterol and is rich in water and nutrients required for weight loss. It contains essential nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Iron, Folate, Magnesium, and Potassium.
As we always been suggested that it’s better to eat whole fruits and vegetables instead of the juice, the same goes for bottle gourd as well. Its juice lacks fibre and has more calories than whole lauki/lauki subji/boiled lauki. A cup of boiled cup of lauki has just 19 calories and 2 grams of fibre. But it takes multiple cups of lauki to produce one cup of lauki juice, which also multiplies the calorie count in it.
Bottle gourd is high in water and fibre content, which makes it low in calories and density per gram. This makes it an ideal addition to your weight loss plan as meals which are lower in energy density may be helpful in losing weight and maintaining it, says a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in May 2012.
Bottle gourd also helps you sleep better, which is a very crucial part of weight loss. A good night’s sleep improves your metabolism and activates your hormones.
Lauki has a diuretic effect
Lauki is recommended for weight loss partially because of its diuretic effect. Diuretics promote weight loss by making you lose water weight and not fat. Although, once you stop having diuretics, the lost weight might come back. Taking diuretics can also be risky as it can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance in the body.
Risks of drinking lauki juice
Drinking excess lauki juice can lead to adverse health issues like bleeding stomach, nausea, ulcers, vomiting blood, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and kidney problems. To limit the risk, it is advisable to drink the juice that has been cooked properly and not consume the one that tastes bitter. The bitter taste of lauki juice is due to the cucurbitacin compounds in it, which is toxic for people. But the good part is that this compound can be destroyed by cooking. The safe variety of gourd is sweet and tender.
How much to consume
One should not drink more than three ounces (roughly 88 ml) of lauki juice in a day, says a study published in the International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological diseases in 2012.
