Check out these expert suggestions for easy (and affordable!) health fixes that don’t require a trip to the pharmacy.

If You Have Chapped Lips

TRY: honey and petroleum jelly

WHY: “Honey has been shown to have both antibacterial and wound-healing properties,” says Adam Friedman, MD, dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “When you combine it with the moisturizing effect of petroleum jelly, you’re relieving and curing chapped lips.”
HOW: Wet lips with lukewarm water, then apply a thin layer of honey to your lips and let it dry for a few seconds. Next, put a layer of petroleum jelly over it and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the moisturizing combo with a cotton swab dipped in warm water. Repeat once daily for a few days.

If You’re Starting to Get Sick

TRY: salt water

WHY: A saline solution (salt and water) helps soothe inflamed tissues in the throat and also loosens mucus, which helps flush out irritants like allergens and bacteria, says Moshe Lewis, MD, a pain management specialist in San Francisco. In fact, one study found that gargling with salt water three times a day reduced respiratory infections up to 40%.

HOW: Dissolve ½ tsp table salt in 8 oz warm water and gargle at least three times a day.

If You Have Stomach Cramps

TRY: chamomile tea

WHY: Research found that chamomile contains glycine, a chemical that decreases contractions in the lower intestine and may relieve muscle spasms, says Jessica Shepherd, MD, assistant professor of OB-GYN and women’s health at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

HOW: Sip on a cup of chamomile tea at least once a day when you’re feeling crampy.

If You Have Bad Breath

TRY: parsley

WHY: Parsley contains chlorophyll, which is thought to fight the odor-causing bacteria that causes bad breath, says Jennifer Wider, MD, women’s health specialist and host of Am I Normal? on Cosmo Radio, found on Sirius Satellite.

HOW: Chew on a fresh sprig for a minute or two whenever necessary

Saving money on your electricity bill doesn’t mean skimping on heat or air conditioning, sitting around in the dark, and hanging all your clothes to dry. But there are a few simple adjustments you can make to help keep your monthly bill down. Here we reveal eight ways to save money on your utility bill.

1. Use fans sparingly Try not to use bath, kitchen and other ventilating fans if you don’t have to. Did you know you can blow away an entire houseful of heat in just three hours using ventilating fans? If you must use one, turn it off as soon as the job is complete.

2. Keep drapes open during the day This might be obvious, but make sure you keep all your drapes and shades open during daylight hours. It allows the sunlight to help assist in warming your home. And don’t forget to close them at night-it helps buffer the cold air.

3. Check for air leaks Test your windows and doors for tightness-if you can feel a draft, they aren’t tight enough. Invest in weather stripping and caulk if needed. It won’t cost much and can save you upwards of 10 percent or more in annual costs. And don’t forget to check your attic access door. If it’s not well insulated, you’re wasting money to heat your attic.

4. Don’t chill out in front of your refrigerator or freezer
Only open the fridge or freezer door when necessary. Don’t hem and haw over what to eat with the door open. You’re letting all the cold air escape and you’ll just end up paying to get it cold again.

5. Use cold water when rinsing dishes Scrape and rinse your dishes with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. And if you can, skip using the dishwasher’s pre-rinse cycle. You will have already done that!

6. Don’t run water while shaving If you leave the water running while you shave your legs, you’re wasting hot water and the energy used to heat it. Instead, rinse your blade in a small shower-safe bowl of water.

7. Invest in three-way lamps When it’s time to buy new lamps, look into three-way versions, which allow for bright, medium, and dim light. Then you can keep the lighting levels on par with the room and situation, which can help save energy and electricity. Only use the high switches for reading or other events that require bright light.

8. Use timers on outdoor lights No need to use outdoor lights when the sun is out. Instead, set timers to coincide with sunset and sunrise. And if don’t absolutely need an area lit all night long, try a motion-activated light.

The first thing you want him to notice is you, not your foundation. We love the way that Emily Blunt impresses hubby John Krasinski with her perfect date-night makeup: a charcoal smoky shadow to play up her blue eyes paired with a rosy-toned lip and highlighted skin. To rock your own great date night makeup look, try these five products that’ll make you look sexy, but not overdone. Score a Subtle Smokey Eye All the ladies know that a smoked up, black-lined eye screams sex kitten. But to men, the heavy liner look can be intimidating. Take it down a few notches by lining your eyes in a dark brown pencil and smudging on a brown or copper shadow. You’ll get a similarly alluring look, but one that works for both day and night. Try: Smashbox Masquerade Eye Palette, $35.

Get a Rosy Flush You want an inward glow that gives your complexion a little boost instead of a colour overload. Using a large fluffy brush, apply a pinky shade to the apples of your cheeks and sweep upward along your cheekbones. Take a step back from the mirror after application and if it’s looking more clown-like than English rose, take it down a few notches with the swipe of a tissue. Remember, in many cases, less really is more. Try: Clarins Instant Blush Magic Colour, $28. Create the Right Foundation There’s nothing scarier to your potential suitor than hyper visible makeup. If your skin is generally free of imperfections, stick with a tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone. If you want fuller coverage, apply foundation only to the areas that need it most -usually around the nose, the centre of the chin or on your forehead, concentrating on any discolourations or blemishes. Take a closer look (in natural lighting if possible) and blend any areas where you can visibly see the product, especially along the jawline. If there’s a marked shade difference between your neck and face seek out a cosmetician to find a better product match. Try: Yves Saint Laurent Radiance Enhancing Flawless Foundation, $48.

Find your Perfect Pucker High drama reds look fab on the red carpet but this lip look should be saved for special occasions -not first dates. For optimal kissability, stick with a lip stain and a gloss. The stain will set your lip look for the night and you can reapply a gloss on top when you hit the candlelit dinner. Try: Estée Lauder Lip Gloss in Nude Rose, $22.50. Highlight your Assets Instead of applying shimmer all over, pick the spots that you really want to accentuate. Apply a gold or silver toned highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones, the inner corners of the eyes, under the arches of your browns and your décolletage if you’re feeling a bit more racy. Product: Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact, $38.

Choose to love your spouse for better or for worse.

• Communicate even if it results in an argument. Choose a private place and a time when you won’t be interrupted.

• Outlaw any name calling, references to past history, and cheap shots during the argument. Stick to the issue at hand.

• Listen to your spouse attentively without interruption. Pay attention to the emotions that lie behind the words and body language. Do not try to change those feelings or offer solutions; just validate them by listening.

• Don’t go to bed angry at each other. Call a truce before bedtime. Most things look better in the morning.

• Take action. Do something every day that shows your love for your spouse even if you don’t feel love. Love has a funny way of creeping back into the picture.

• Remember that the bond of love grows even stronger after you’ve survived difficult times.

Make a list of past events that have injured the relationship. Forgive and forget, but also learn from the events.

Set clear boundaries as a couple about what is acceptable behavior for your in-laws. Communicate these boundaries to your in-laws when necessary.

Take time to get to know your in-laws. With knowledge comes greater understanding of these people and their behavior.

Be polite and treat your in-laws with dignity and respect even if you don’t like them.

Learn to accept advice from your in-laws graciously even if you have no intention of following it: “Thank you for your thoughtful suggestion.”

Always give your in-laws another chance. Set new limits if necessary after a negative encounter, but keep the bond alive.

No matter what time of day it is, or how busy you are, there are certain golden rules when applying your makeup. Here is a short guide to getting your war paint right every time!

Laying The Foundations Foundation should be the perfect match to your skin tone. Nobody looks good when they have skin the color of a pumpkin! And worse yet, beware of the tidemarks at the jaw line. Always make sure that your foundation is well blended if you want to avoid looking like you’re wearing a mask.

Top tip – if you use a shimmering moisturizer before you apply your foundation then your skin will absolutely glow! Dark Circles?

No way! There is a huge range of products on the market for different tones and textures of concealer. Don’t be tempted to go two shades lighter than your natural color, as it will make the darkness of your skin more gray and muddy. And be careful not to lay it on too thick. Apart from the fact that it looks like you’re wearing too much makeup, it may also damage the delicate skin beneath your eyes. Remember, you want to tint the discoloration, not mask it.

Top tip – Have a good look at the actual color of your dark circles. If your darkness is gray, lightly apply a soft pink eye shadow to the circles before applying your foundation. If your darkness is more of a blue hue, use a light peach color first instead. Powdering Up

Keep your powder application light by using loose powder and a big brush for application. Less is definitely more here. Make sure that you buy a good powder that will sink into your skin, rather than visibly lie of the top of it.

Top tip – before applying your powder, try blotting your foundation with a tissue. This will remove any excess oils, and help to stop you from getting shiny. Blushing Beauty

Only apply your blush to the apples of your cheeks, and build up the color layers slowly. Next, blend the blush in so that the color looks natural. Remember, you’re just trying to enhance the facial definition that you already have. No matter how much we may want to, it is impossible to draw on fantastic cheekbones. Just be yourself!

Top tip – if you make a mistake and put too much blusher on, don’t panic! You don’t need to start over. Instead, just moisten a sponge and gently dab your cheeks with it. This will dilute the color and return your overall look to something acceptable! Luscious Lips

Whatever lipstick you use, there is one golden rule to follow… just make sure that it is right for your skin tone, hair and eye coloring. Go vampy for the night time with darker shades, and keep it calm and cute with tinted lip-gloss during the day.

Top tip – if you want great looking shimmery lips try applying sparkling eye shadow over the top of your lipstick to create a new shiny shade, absolutely free! Powerful Peepers

So long as it’s applied in a constant, unwobbly line, your eyeliner can be as bold as you wish. Use lighter shades of eye shadow during the day, and go darker at night. A shimmering highlighter applied just beneath the eyebrow gives even the most tired looking peepers a lift. And always apply your mascara in thin coats, building up the length and thickness slowly. This helps to avoid that terrible clumping which can happen it you try to apply too much, too soon.

Top tip – blend your eyeliner with a thin layer of eye shadow. This will make your eyes look absolutely magnetic!

Well, then, this list of 9 best foods for your skin will show you which foods have the biggest toll on our beauty!

1. Low fat yogurt … Low fat dairy products are full of vitamin A. This essential vitamin does wonders for our skin. If you have a thyroid problem or diabetes that’s another reason for you to stock up on organic law fat yogurts!

2. Berries … I am talking about plums, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries (No, not the phone!). These berries have a great antioxidant capacity which means – the more of these we have, the longer our skin will look youthful and healthy!

3. Salmon … Our skin needs essential fatty acids. If fish isn’t your thing, try walnuts, flax seed or canola oil. All these will give you an amazing result! Omega 3 and Omega 6 may sound like a Sci-fi flick, but these fatty acids are a must for a beautiful, well moisturized skin.

4. Green tea … This drink contains polyphenols which have anti-inflammatory characteristics. And despite what they say, a good tea will not dehydrate your body, it will only work as an anti-oxidant and an anti-inflammatory agent that’ll keep bacteria at bay and will fight off those free radicals that make our skin age early.

5.
Scientists are recommending half a litre of water before meals as a way to cut calorie intake, reports express.co.uk.

People struggling in the battle of the bulge can put an end to over-eating by simply filling up on the cheapest of all calorie-free drinks – water – before eating.

The findings are set to make dieting simpler for thousands of people who struggle with weight control and invest time and money in complicated diet plans.

In the weight loss study, obese people aged between 55 to 75 were divided into two groups.

One group drank two cups of water about half an hour before a meal and the other group did not.

It was discovered that members of the group who drank the water lost nearly five kilograms more than the group that had not been offered any water.

That is beyond discussion. How does one make sure that his resume is top notch and bullet proof, however? There are several websites with tips around the web, but most bring just a handful of them. We wanted to put them all together in a single place, and that is what you will find below: 44 resume writing tips.

1. Know the purpose of your resume Some people write a resume as if the purpose of the document was to land a job. As a result they end up with a really long and boring piece that makes them look like desperate job hunters. The objective of your resume is to land an interview, and the interview will land you the job (hopefully!).

2. Back up your qualities and strengths Instead of creating a long (and boring) list with all your qualities (e.g., disciplined, creative, problem solver) try to connect them with real life and work experiences. In other words, you need to back these qualities and strengths up, else it will appear that you are just trying to inflate things.

3. Make sure to use the right keywords Most companies (even smaller ones) are already using digital databases to search for candidates. This means that the HR department will run search queries based on specific keywords. Guess what, if your resume doesn’t have the keywords related to the job you are applying for, you will be out even before the game starts. These keywords will usually be nouns. Check the job description and related job ads for a clue on what the employer might be looking for.

4. Use effective titles Like it or not, employers will usually make a judgment about your resume in 5 seconds. Under this time frame the most important aspect will be the titles that you listed on the resume, so make sure they grab the attention. Try to be as descriptive as possible, giving the employer a good idea about the nature of your past work experiences. For example: Bad title: Accounting Good title: Management of A/R and A/P and Recordkeeping

5. Proofread it twice It would be difficult to emphasize the importance of proofreading your resume. One small typo and your chances of getting hired could slip. Proofreading it once is not enough, so do it twice, three times or as many as necessary.

6. Use bullet points No employer will have the time (or patience) to read long paragraphs of text. Make sure, therefore, to use bullet points and short sentences to describe your experiences, educational background and professional objectives.

7. Where are you going? Including professional goals can help you by giving employers an idea of where you are going, and how you want to arrive there. You don’t need to have a special section devoted to your professional objectives, but overall the resume must communicate it. The question of whether or not to highlight your career objectives on the resume is a polemic one among HR managers, so go with your feeling. If you decide to list them, make sure they are not generic.

8. Put the most important information first This point is valid both to the overall order of your resume, as well as to the individual sections. Most of the times your previous work experience will be the most important part of the resume, so put it at the top. When describing your experiences or skills, list the most important ones first.

9. Attention to the typography First of all make sure that your fonts are big enough. The smaller you should go is 11 points, but 12 is probably safer. Do not use capital letters all over the place, remember that your goal is to communicate a message as fast and as clearly as possible. Arial and Times are good choices.

10. Do not include “no kidding” information There are many people that like to include statements like “Available for interview” or “References available upon request.” If you are sending a resume to a company, it should be a given that you are available for an interview and that you will provide references if requested. Just avoid items that will make the employer think “no kidding!”

11. Explain the benefits of your skills Merely stating that you can do something will not catch the attention of the employer. If you manage to explain how it will benefit his company, and to connect it to tangible results, then you will greatly improve your chances.

12. Avoid negativity Do not include information that might sound negative in the eyes of the employer. This is valid both to your resume and to interviews. You don’t need to include, for instance, things that you hated about your last company.

13. Achievements instead of responsibilities Resumes that include a long list of “responsibilities included…” are plain boring, and not efficient in selling yourself. Instead of listing responsibilities, therefore, describe your professional achievements.

14. No pictures Sure, we know that you are good looking, but unless you are applying for a job where the physical traits are very important (e.g., modeling, acting and so on), and unless the employer specifically requested it, you should avoid attaching your picture to the resume.

15. Use numbers This tip is a complement to the 13th one. If you are going to describe your past professional achievements, it would be a good idea to make them as solid as possible. Numbers are your friends here. Don’t merely mention that you increased the annual revenues of your division, say that you increased them by $100,000, by 78%, and so on.

16. One resume for each employer One of the most common mistakes that people make is to create a standard resume and send it to all the job openings that they can find. Sure it will save you time, but it will also greatly decrease the chances of landing an interview (so in reality it could even represent a waste of time). Tailor your resume for each employer. The same point applies to your cover letters.

17. Identify the problems of the employer A good starting point to tailor your resume for a specific employer is to identify what possible problems he might have at hand. Try to understand the market of the company you are applying for a job, and identify what kind of difficulties they might be going through. After that illustrate on your resume how you and your skills would help to solve those problems.

18. Avoid age discrimination It is illegal to discriminate people because of their age, but some employers do these considerations nonetheless. Why risk the trouble? Unless specifically requested, do not include your age on your resume.

19. You don’t need to list all your work experiences If you have job experiences that you are not proud of, or that are not relevant to the current opportunity, you should just omit them. Mentioning that you used to sell hamburgers when you were 17 is probably not going to help you land that executive position.

20. Go with what you got If you never had any real working experience, just include your summer jobs or volunteer work. If you don’t have a degree yet, mention the title and the estimated date for completion. As long as those points are relevant to the job in question, it does not matter if they are official or not.

21. Sell your fish Remember that you are trying to sell yourself. As long as you don’t go over the edge, all the marketing efforts that you can put in your resume (in its content, design, delivery method and so on) will give you an advantage over the other candidates.

22. Don’t include irrelevant information Irrelevant information such as political affiliation, religion and sexual preference will not help you. In fact it might even hurt your chances of landing an interview. Just skip it.

23. Use Mr. and Ms. if appropriate If you have a gender neutral name like Alex or Ryan make sure to include the Mr. or Ms. prefix, so that employers will not get confused about your gender.

24. No lies, please Seems like a no brainer, but you would be amused to discover the amount of people that lie in their resumes. Even small lies should be avoided. Apart from being wrong, most HR departments do background checks these days, and if you are buster it might ruin your credibility for good.

25. Keep the salary in mind The image you will create with your resume must match the salary and responsibility level that you are aiming for.

26. Analyze job ads You will find plenty of useful information on job ads. Analyze no only the ad that you will be applying for, but also those from companies on the same segment or offering related positions. You should be able to identify what profile they are looking for and how the information should be presented.

27. Get someone else to review your resume Even if you think you resume is looking kinky, it would be a good idea to get a second and third opinion about it. We usually become blind to our own mistakes or way of reasoning, so another people will be in a good position to evaluate the overall quality of your resume and make appropriate suggestions.

28. One or two pages The ideal length for a resume is a polemic subject. Most employers and recruiting specialists, however, say that it should contain one or two pages at maximum. Just keep in mind that, provided all the necessary information is there, the shorter your resume, the better.

29. Use action verbs A very common advice to job seekers is to use action verbs. But what are they? Action verbs are basically verbs that will get noticed more easily, and that will clearly communicate what your experience or achievement were. Examples include managed, coached, enforced and planned.

30. Use a good printer If you are going to use a paper version of your resume, make sure to use a decent printer. Laser printers usually get the job done. Plain white paper is the preferred one as well.

31. No hobbies Unless you are 100% sure that some of your hobbies will support you candidacy, avoid mentioning them. I know you are proud of your swimming team, but share it with your friends and not with potential employers.

32. Update your resume regularly It is a good idea to update your resume on a regular basis. Add all the new information that you think is relevant, as well as courses, training programs and other academic qualifications that you might receive along the way. This is the best way to keep track of everything and to make sure that you will not end up sending an obsolete document to the employer.

33. Mention who you worked with If you have reported or worked with someone that is well known in your industry, it could be a good idea to mention it on the resume. The same thing applies to presidents and CEOs. If you reported to or worked directly with highly ranked executives, add it to the resume.

34. No scattered information Your resume must have a clear focus. If would cause a negative impression if you mentioned that one year you were studying drama, and the next you were working as an accountant. Make sure that all the information you will include will work towards a unified image. Employers like decided people.

35. Make the design flow with white space Do not jam your resume with text. Sure we said that you should make your resume as short and concise as possible, but that refers to the overall amount of information and not to how much text you can pack in a single sheet of paper. White space between the words, lines and paragraphs can improve the legibility of your resume.

36. Lists all your positions If you have worked a long time for the same company (over 10 years) it could be a good idea to list all the different positions and roles that you had during this time separately. You probably had different responsibilities and developed different skills on each role, so the employer will like to know it.

37. No jargon or slang It should be common sense, but believe me, it is not. Slang should never be present in a resume. As for technical jargon, do not assume that the employer will know what you are talking about. Even if you are sending your resume to a company in the same segment, the person who will read it for the first time might not have any technical expertise.

38. Careful with sample resume templates There are many websites that offer free resume templates. While they can help you to get an idea of what you are looking for, do not just copy and paste one of the most used ones. You certainly don’t want to look just like any other candidate, do you?

39. Create an email proof formatting It is very likely that you will end up sending your resume via email to most companies. Apart from having a Word document ready to go as an attachment, you should also have a text version of your resume that does not look disfigured in the body of the email or in online forms. Attachments might get blocked by spam filters, and many people just prefer having the resume on the body of the email itself.

40. Remove your older work experiences If you have been working for 20 years or more, there is no need to have 2 pages of your resume listing all your work experiences, starting with the job at the local coffee shop at the age of 17! Most experts agree that the last 15 years of your career are enough.

41. No fancy design details Do not use a colored background, fancy fonts or images on your resume. Sure, you might think that the little flowers will cheer up the document, but other people might just throw it away at the sight.

42. No pronouns You resume should not contain the pronouns “I” or “me.” That is how we normally structure sentences, but since your resume is a document about your person, using these pronouns is actually redundant.

43. Don’t forget the basics The first thing on your resume should be your name. It should be bold and with a larger font than the rest of the text. Make sure that your contact details are clearly listed. Secondly, both the name and contact details should be included on all the pages of the resume (if you have more than one).

44. Consider getting professional help If you are having a hard time to create your resume, or if you are receiving no response whatsoever from companies, you could consider hiring a professional resume writing service. There are both local and online options are available, and usually the investment will be worth the money.

You know, you won’t always have me to kick around and fix your computer problems for you, so I thought I’d take the time to put together this little guide to computer troubleshooting.

Bookmark this post for posterity (or print it out — you never know with this Internet business!) and give it a scan next time your PC is acting funny. It’s basic, but comprehensive. I hope it helps!

Q: My computer is acting weird.

Reboot. If that doesn’t work turn it off, then back on (it’s different than rebooting, I swear). If that doesn’t work, boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during boot time), then shut down and reboot normally again. If that doesn’t fix things, try the next tip …

Q: My computer is running slow.

This is inevitably a natural yet unfortunate problem with almost every Windows computer. The more it is used, the more digital detritus builds up on your hard drive and in system memory, since many applications install little programs that you may not be aware of but are always running in the background. The longer a PC is in service, the worse this gets.

Best fix: Uninstall programs you don’t need, and be liberal about it. If that doesn’t help, your best bet is to reinstall Windows. Most computers come with a mechanism (disc or hard-drive partition) to return them to their factory state. You’ll likely be shocked by the results.

Q: I tried that and my computer is still running slow.

Install more RAM. 4GB is good these days.

Q: What about registry cleaners?

It probably won’t help and could do more damage than good. Some people swear by them, but honestly the benefit is minimal at best.

Q: And disk defragmenting?

Most users won’t notice a lick of difference after defragging and shouldn’t bother wasting the time.

Q: I have a virus.

Are you sure? If your computer is behaving erratically, make sure you’ve rebooted and allowed the system to fully load all its apps, then try to re-create the behavior. If it doesn’t happen all the time, it’s probably just Windows instability, best solved by removing apps and/or reinstalling Windows. And most malware apps are designed not to be noticeable by the end user; that’s the whole idea, to go undiscovered.

If you do have a virus, most anti-malware software will do a credible job of cleaning up your system these days. Try Norton, Kaspersky, or Avira if you’re broke. System Restore can also be invaluable in cleaning up a virus attack, if the virus hasn’t disabled it.

Whatever you do, make sure you install a security application and keep it up to date — before you have a problem.

Q: My computer is hot and/or loud.

This is often a dust-accumulation issue. All computers should be dusted regularly. Get a can of compressed air and blast out the fans, vents, and any other orifices, including a full interior spray if you have a desktop.

Q: Any special rules for laptops?

Turn your laptop off — all the way, using “Shut Down” — when you move it farther than a few hundred feet. And never block the cooling vents.

Q: How should I backup my data?

I don’t care, as long as you do it and do it regularly. Using an external hard drive to copy all your important documents is an easy and cheap way. Online backup services like Mozy are even easier and require virtually no thought on your end, but they can slow down your computer and Web connection.
